REVIEW: Atrocity - Atlantis Napalm Records, 2004
8.5/10
Atrocity - Atlantis - cover art It’s been a while. A lot of people have almost forgotten about the existence of the German quintet Atrocity, but they’re back again, after almost four years of silence. "Atlantis" marks not only the comeback of vocalist and ideologist Alexander Krull, guitarists Mathias Roederer and Thorsten Bauer, bass player Christian Lukhaup and drummer Martin Schmidt, but also these five musicians’ return to their extreme roots. Quite a huge part of the recording reminds of the old, mid-90's death metal-ish period of the band - just listen to the opening four tracks, for example, or “Apocalypse”, “Clash of the Titans” and… well, actually to the bigger part of the creation. Of course, you shouldn’t think they're straight, old-school death metal or something like that. Guitar-dominated mid-paced brutality is still the keyword here, however varied by a lot of soundtrack-like orchestrations (especially audible in “Omen” and the interlude “Lost Eden”), clean vocal intrusions every now and then, and tons of catchy intriguing melodies. Luckily, there’s also a little something for fans of Atrocity’s latest electro / gothic / metal full-length offerings "Gemini" and "Werk 80", namely the epic cuts "Enigma" and "Aeon", the hit-single "Cold Black Days" (accompanied by a video on the CD as well), and - to a certain extent - the main track "The Sunken Paradise". Yes, they’re back. Heavier and definitely more diverse than before. And different... as always.
