REVIEW: Atrocity - Contaminated Open Grave Records, 2007
9/10
Atrocity - Contaminated - cover art Atrocity (not to be confused with the German band) formed in 1985 during the crossover years of hardcore punk and metal. Both of which the band fused together as their sound. The band recorded their first album (Infected) in 1990, and a second album (The Art of Death) in 1992. The band then disbanded. Fourteen years later Atrocity has gotten back together to write and record new material. In the meantime they have released this EP with alternate versions of previously released songs which were recorded during the recording session of “Infected”. Even if you haven’t listened to Atrocity before (like myself), you are brought straight back to the old school underground days. A time when bands slaughtered their equipment trying to play as fast and as harsh as possible. What’s contained within this EP is thrashed out hardcore. The drumming isn’t quite grindcore, but it’s fast. The high intensity rhythm’s will get any pit started. While the riffs are creative and never grow tired. Rob Wedda’s vocals remind me of a young Nik Bullen in Napalm Death; very cool. This was recorded at a time when metal and hardcore sounded more like punk, rather than now-a-days when the hardcore is more metallic. Got to give a huge thanks to the people at Open Grave Records for exhuming this EP!!
