REVIEW: Atrocius - Shades Of The Sanguine Tree Self-released, 2006
2/10
Atrocius - Shades Of The Sanguine Tree - cover art There really is little not vulnerable to disparagement when acts such as our dear Atrocious here take funeral doom as their niche of choice and thereby manage to successfully render it a pitiable excuse for mediocre, unimaginative musicianship. Its bland repetitiveness (where herein is intriguing only if you possess a three-second memory) and long-drawn, time-filler keyboard sequences are as attention grabbing as the proverbial drying paint, leaving one wondering whether any particular song from the demo is actually leading somewhere at all or simply caught in a loop. In terms of atmosphere, yes, one could very well say that there is something inherently mesmerising and suggestive of what some people might describe as a dark and gripping aura which could've fared even better within a more suitable context. But in this kind of soporific passages these are things directly symptomatic of the musical setup in itself and certainly not indicative of any sort of imagination or creativity at that. Its apparent lack of organisation, emotional backbone, and artistic vision and most importantly the complete absence of a coherent musical direction leave much to be desired from this piece of pubescent experimentation. Perhaps this demo should've rather remained in the band's annals as a rehearsal tape and shunned from the light of day because as it stands its value is hardly worth more than a listen before it takes its according place in the endless sepulchre of subpar releases.

Back to the drawing board lads....
