REVIEW: Aurora Borealis - Northern Lights Diehard Music, 2001
7/10
Aurora Borealis - Northern Lights - cover art Aurora Borealis is the name of an early but still very good Einherjer song and although this is an American band they have adapted a lot of the Nordic black metal influences. The black metal scene in USA seems to be growing and some bands are in fact really good compared to many others in this over-populated subgenre and Aurora Borealis is one of those. It's a pity that they haven't been blessed by the dark forces of the universe with a better production that corresponded to their skills because even if Darkthrone has managed to succeed with a deliberately lousy sound quality most bands need to sound good. Compared to their Norwegian colleagues they are however still miles ahead... Aurora Borealis doesn't rely solely on the old black metal trademarks of pounding drums, extremely fast guitars and the abyssic vocals since they have also added a touch of technical death/thrash metal riffs which adds a new fresh element to their music. I think it would be a good idea for the band to continue in the same direction with further development of their non-black metal influences but without loosing their roots. With a better production this is a band with lots of potential.
