The Dutch band Autumn has been in a state of progression and change since
they released "Summer's End" back in 2004. Several line-up changes have made
the band transpire into into something not completely but at least slightly
different than they used to be. Riding upon the gothic metal vibe, Metal
Blade Records decided to pick up the band for the release of their new album
"My New Time" but Autumn is not your typical Tristania nor Lacuna Coil or
Evanescence clone which is probably why Metal Blade found them intrigueing
enough to offer a contract. Nienke de Jong's Trail Of Tears-like vocals will
probably still remain the most important attraction for fans of the band but
"My New Time" luckily has more to offer the listener even though I personally
like her voice as well as personal singing style, moving from strong and
passionate to fragile with ease.
It is unfortunately apparent that Autumn have moved slightly into a more streamlined American modern rock sound but the keyboard arrangements in particular remain firmly rooted in the band's past. This fairly unusual mix is most likely to appeal to a wider group of people than their earlier material but I am not sure if it's a good decision yet. What I most certainly do enjoy is the progressive rock influence that the new members seem to have brought with them, adding an extra dimension to songs like "Closest Friends Conspire" and "My New Time". Autumn has metamorphosed into a dynamic and mature modern rock band draped in a darker atmosphere of gothic melancholy. A little bit of a more innovative approach when it comes to the song writing process would not hurt the band but it might be a while before the new line-up peaks.
