If my memory serves me right (it has been known to fail on several occasions I may warn you) this is the first doom metal band from Spain that I have been given the chance to get to know so far. I have no idea if doom metal is more or less popular in Spain than it is in the rest of the world but there are apparently a few bands who have recorded demos at least. Autumnal was formed in 1998 and they have recorded two demos prior to this one (one untitled one in 1998 already and "In My Shell" in 2000) but as I have not heard any of these I can not say anything about the band's development or make any comparisons. The violin plays a very important role in the music of Autumnal just like it did for My Dying Bride earlier on before Martin Powell abandoned them for a more lucrative career in the new shock rock band (yeah, I know, black metal...) Cradle Of Filth. The guitar sound and the mournful atmosphere also reminds me a lot of early to mid-period My Dying Bride but the more aggrevating Anathema sound can also be identified. The violin helps create a feeling of sadness, something that most doom metal bands have in common, but it is not as efficient for Autumnal as it has been for My Dying Bride or The Sins Of Thy Beloved for that matter. The My Dying Bride similarity does not end with this because the band's vocalist Javier de Pablo is doing his best to imitate Aaron Stainthorpe more than once. There is a lot of agony in Javier's voice but sometimes he stretches it a bit too far and spoils the moment, at least for me. Autumnal have found their own identity and there is a vivid flow of emotions and feelings on this new demo of their's but I hope their song writing improves in the future. That is what is missing right now because it feels a little bit too much as if I've been listening to one single veeery long song.
