REVIEW: Avantasia - The Metal Opera AFM Records, 2001
8/10
Avantasia - The Metal Opera - cover art Avantasia is the solo project of Tobias Sammet from Edguy. He had always wanted to do an album with a lot of different vocalists and here is the result - a beautiful and majestic epic performed by sixteen different musicians and lasting for almost an hour. Among the guests on this album you can find Kai Hansen (Gamma Ray), André Matos (Angra), David DeFeis (Virgin Steele) and Timo Tolkki (Stratovarius). A power metal opera is perhaps the best word for this album since most of the musicians on it are from this genre and it shows in the music. Except for the great prelude the strongest tracks are "Farewell", "Avantasia" and the two closing ones. This kind of music would fit perfect as a movie soundtrack with emotional and majestic songs that moves. This could be a great album for fans of power metal and progressive rock since some of the best musicians in the world contribute to the album. Unfortunately some songs tend to be a little boring with nothing really happening. The things I don´t like about the album are the fact that the slower songs are a lot better than the faster and the lack of female vocalists. The only one appearing on the album is Sharon Den Adel (Within Temptation) and even though she has a great voice and performs really well she is only featured on one song. That is really weak I think. It was produced by Tobias Sammet, co-produced by Norman Meiritz, recorded at Rhoen-Studios, Germany, engineered by Norman Meiritz, mixed at Finnvox-Studios, Finland, by Mikko Karmila and finally mastered at Finnvox by Mika Jussila.
