REVIEW: Avatar - Thoughts Of No Tomorrow Gain Music Entertainment, 2006
6/10
Avatar - Thoughts Of No Tomorrow - cover art Avatar is a band from Gothenburg, Sweden, who have decided that the world needs another Swedish melodic death metal band. Whether their assumption is correct or not I leave for the future to be proven. These youngsters are only 18 years old at this time and they have been anticipated a prosperous future within the genre by several Swedish newspapers already as their debut album is being issued by the fledgling label Gain Music Entertainment. Despite evident individual talent within the band, "Thoughts Of No Tomorrow" will unfortunately fail to compete with the metal elite for a couple of reasons. First of all this is all too clearly a budget recording - the cover art looks cheap and the production is thin and the guitar sound in particular is more annoying than impressive and not at all suited for the music of Avatar. The early In Flames flirtations do sometimes reach the inner core of my musical appreciation but the vocalist's subpar performance and his unfortunate desire to switch between semi-brutal death growls and hardcore screams fail to impress me. Avatar need a few more years to mature and grow a personality of their own before they are able to wipe the rest of the world off their feet.
