I love living
in the U.S. This is a great
country. Unfortunately the words "American black
metal" in the
underground media make people cringe..
So here is Averse
Sefira. An "American Black metal act". I first opened
the cd and I was
thrilled thinking this could be the American band that
might match our
brothers from Norway. Eegad I was wrong. A.S. plays
straight in your face
black metal with a pretty good singer, mediocre
song writing, fair lyrics,
and well.... um ... kinda corny stage
names.
Like "Enochian Airstrike" on
drums! I like stage names but lets not get
too stupid. Upon looking at the
front cover logo once again I couldn't
make heads or tails of what the
fucking thing said. Band logos are
getting worse with all that scribble. You
just have to look at the side
of the cd in order to read it.
I like how
they approach the scene with a no nonsense style but
there's a certain point
in fast music where after a while ... it just
starts
to sound like a bunch
of noise. These guys fall victim to that. The
problem with these songs is
that none of them really have any sort of
hook to 'em. It is the first album
I've heard where I find myself
disagreeing with the chords used in the
songs. They go high when they
should go low on the fretboard ... and vice
versa. The songs are nothing
but mid to mid-high trebly sounding stuff. The
only time where the lows
come in good are in between songs that have these
cool eerie sound
scapes in them. After that it's right back to those hi's
again. Song
number 1 sounds like song number 2, song number 3 sounds like
song
number 4 and so on. There is no variety. I love raw black
metal,
Darkthrone and Judas Iscariot do it right. But there is a wrong way
and
A.S. comes close to that category. I understand what A.S.
"Battles
Clarion" is trying to do and I feel for them. But they just don't
pull
it off as a special band in the music writing dept. Some parts of
the
songs will start getting good but then all of a sudden in the
middle
they will do something that sounds a little rinky-dink. When I
was
listening to "Battle's Clarion" I actually yelled at my stereo
saying
"No-no-NO!". The U.S. is still the last great super power in the
world
but when it comes to black metal overall we are kind of the
laughing
stock. Hell I think even Somalia and Afghanistan has better bands
then
us.
