After returning back home from the "Progpower III" festival, Atlanta native guitarist Yan Leviathan began writing songs that were inspired by the festival itself. This was November 2002. It did not take long before he was in touch with talented metal musicians and began recording the songs in a Phoenix, AZ, studio. The name Avian was chosen from his favorite book "The Gardens Of Rama" where Avian is an extremely intelligent and kind-hearted birdlike creature. "From The Depths Of Time" is the first official result of Yan's project and it is a conceptual album with slight religious overtones. He managed to gather an impressive line-up for the recording of the debut album. How about former Megadeth bassist Dave Ellefson and the Balance Of Power / Pyramaze credited vocalist Lance King?
"From The Depths Of Time" is an unusually diverse power metal album where influences are not only drawn from modern day bands like Hammerfall and Edguy but also from old-school heavy metal. The overall ambiance relies more on a mellow groove and nice, thought out melodies than speed. Lance King is one of my favorite vocalists within the genre and he is honoring his services in a marvellous manner as usual. Once in a while Yan Leviathan puts his qualities as a solo guitarist on display but the song writing is never taken to extremes. From beginning to end the different elements within the music are balanced very well and the album shows a very coherent face. Avian will not exactly turn your world around but the creative force is strong enough to make this an album well worth recommending to everyone who's a fan of melodic and progressive heavy / power metal.
Stand-out tracks: "The Fear", "Final Frontier", "Single Blade Of Vengeance", "Blinding Force", "Queen Of The Insane". The highlights are many as you can see.
