REVIEW: Axel Rudi Pell - Shadow Zone Steamhammer Records, 2002
8/10
Axel Rudi Pell - Shadow Zone - cover art Axel Rudi Pell is back yet again with his umpteenth album or at least it feels that way but I think it is his tenth or something like that. Ten tracks lasting for more than an hour altogether will make this a wonderful gift to all fans of old-style hard rock / metal. Fans of Deep Purple, Rainbow, mid-period Queensrÿche and Yngwie Malmsteen will certainly not be disappointed with this release. It shows clearly that these guys have been playing their instruments for a very long time. The songs are very well written, every riff is at its place and the songs all have a very nice flow. Especially the vocals from Johnny Gioeli are exceptionally well done and he is definitely one of the finest vocalists of today. His voice is wonderfully powerful and his way of singing is very passionate. You can almost feel his love for the music in every word that comes out of his mouth and this is what makes the difference between a good singer and a great singer. Masterpieces worth mentioning: "Live For The King", "Time Of The Truth". Could have made it through the day without the rather boring ballad "Heartbreaker" though...
