REVIEW: Axenstar - Perpetual Twilight Arise Records, 2002
6/10
Axenstar - Perpetual Twilight - cover art Axenstar is a young Swedish band who have now been given the chance to release their debut album through the Spanish label Arise Records. The band formed in 1998 but until 2001 they were known under the moniker Powerage. Axenstar is yet another power metal band made up of gifted individuals but they fail to make their music stand out quite as much as needed to be really interesting today when there are hundreds of other bands to choose between. It is of course well played, well produced and the band is equipped with a pretty good singer in Magnus Eriksson (his brother Thomas Eriksson is also in the band by the way) but there is something missing in order to take them to the top. There is something unusual with this release though. When it comes to power metal the vocals are usually important and mixed to be in the foreground but this time the vocals have been buried a little behind the instruments. I don't know if it's Magnus Eriksson or the producer who doesn't trust the voice but it's hard to tell whether it was the right choice or not. Decent fast paced melodic power metal with plenty of guitar solos that might appeal to fans of Sonata Arctica and Rhapsody but without a real edge. Stand-out tracks: "King Of Tragedy".
