REVIEW: Axenstar - The Inquisition Arise Records, 2005
7/10
Axenstar - The Inquisition - cover art "The Inquisition" is the third album from Swedish power metallers Axenstar and their final release for Arise Records. In every genre there are leaders and followers. Axenstar belong to the followers. In every genre there are followers who recycle themselves and the genre while boring the hell out of the listener but there are also those who are quite good at what they do and see no reason why you should get rid of your old books just because of a thin layer of dust. Axenstar belong to the latter. "The Inquisition" is business as usual for the band but it continues to embrace the melodic power metal of their previous album "Far From Heaven" where the band showed themselves more mature compared to their debut. The song structures are usually simple and straight-forward but the guitar work is quite impressive at times, providing the music with both nice melodies and tasteful solos. The laid back vocals from Magnus Winterwild hold up well enough but he lacks the edge needed to join the top league of metal singers. If you enjoy quality melodic power metal and don't care much for surprises or challenges then be my guest and give Axenstar some of your attention. Sometimes changes are good, sometimes changes are bad, it's simply your pick.
