REVIEW: Axis Powers - Pure Slaughter Iron Fist Productions, 2005
6.5/10
Axis Powers - Pure Slaughter - cover art Axis Powers was formed in 1997 in Uddevalla on the west coast of Sweden by members of the black metal act Suicidal Winds. Uddevalla is a city that I have a rather special connection to as my grandfather was born there and his two sisters still live there but I sincerely doubt that they would have any interest in this album. With Axis Powers Mathias, Peter and Fredrik explore other areas than with their original band together with drummer Christoffer Larsson, honoring Swedish old-school death metal heroes such as Entombed, Grave, Unleashed and Crematory (not the German gothic metallers of course but the Swedish band). After a couple of split releases they attracted the eyes and ears of Iron Fist Productions (the new label created by the founder of legendary No Fashion Records) who offered a contract for a full-length album. Lyrically "Pure Slaughter" isn't characterized by the more traditional anti-christian theme but focuses on the brutalities and atrocities of WWII, a subject worthy of a death metal band. The band has managed to capture the essence of early 90s Swedish death metal - the gritty Sunlight guitar sound, the raw punky feeling and the abyssic growling - but it holds a greater sentimental value than it does a musical ditto. No news and few surprises but a decent tribute album to an age that should not be forgotten.
