REVIEW: Axxis - Paradise In Flames AFM Records, 2006
8.5/10
Axxis - Paradise In Flames - cover art Axxis is one of the most well-known bands of the German heavy rock / metal scene. Staying consistently productive and reasonably successful throughout the entire 90s they have reached another peak in their career with "Paradise In Flames" which is one of the strongest releases the genre has seen for a while now. I have listened to this album ten times or more since I received it and I have seriously tried to spot any mistakes or flaws but so far there's nothing. Everything from the beautiful metaphorically correct cover art and production to the solid song writing and stellar vocal performance of Bernhard Weiss seems to have been taken to utmost perfection on this album. Without resembling traditional power metal singing, Weiss' clear and bright vocals spreads a warmhearted and passionate atmosphere throughout the entire recording and in a couple of songs he is accompanied by an impressive female vocalist as well. The chorus of "Ice Wind" simply sends shivers down the spine. Devoid of clichés (well, almost at least, the final track "Passion For Rock" is rather silly), Axxis let no-one guide their way as they lead us into the future. Not all songs here are hits such as "Take My Hand" and "Ice Wind" but the overall quality is found on a very high level. Incredibly catchy, semi-symphonic and highly melodic heavy metal. Possibly the band's best album ever.
