REVIEW: Azaghal - Codex Antitheus Avantgarde Music, 2005
8/10
Azaghal - Codex Antitheus - cover art Long-running Finnish evildoers Azaghal have found a new home at Italy's Avantgarde Music for the release of their latest full-length album. "Codex Antitheus" opens up with a rather catchy song called "Agios O Baphometh" which is in my opinion the strongest single track to be found here. The overall quality of the album is quite high however and I would not go out on a limb if I were to say that this is one of the few interesting black metal bands who struggle on the more extreme side of the black metal coin. Too many copycats and clones who claim to be more true than everyone else are around today but Azaghal appear to be not only impressive song writers and in harmony with the basic concepts of black metal but also quite skilled musicians which are qualities that many bands lack. The thrashy "Kumarra Petoa" with its King Diamond-esque atmosphere and tasteful solos is an interesting inclusion even though black metal purists and hardcore fans of the band might find it difficult to accept at first. Varjoherra has experimented further with various kinds of vocals which is a good idea I think because diversity is definitely the greatest strength of Azaghal and "Codex Antitheus".
