REVIEW: Azure - King Of Stars – Bearer Of Dark Pulverised Records, 2005
7/10
Azure - King Of Stars – Bearer Of Dark - cover art A friendly mixture of sounds based on melodic death/black bands is what the listener is going to stumble upon when putting on the stereo the last album by Azure from Sweden (there is another Azure from Finland). To be exact, in general Azure are musically influenced by Dissection (but with more variations) and verses are sang with high-pitched vocals the Death way. Encomiastic is their rejection of the easy path, the songs feature lots of changes and you can find plenty of variations here and there so forget about easy visible verse-chorus structures. This maybe makes the overall album feeling less catchy but also more manifold and interesting to listen. Despite some tempo breaks don´t convince me 100% at times and seem to be “in a hurry”, drums are technically skilled and in general they´re one of the highlights of the album. Schizoid, until the point that they don´t play the same pattern for more than a few seconds, I´d say! The frantic feeling is more or less present everytime, although the intensity of the shorty opening “Greeting Chaos” is hardly ever matched in the rest of the album. Since the amount of riffs displayed is really high, there are surely quite a few the listener would love, and others likely to become just fillers between those interesting ones. “King Of Stars – Bearer Of Dark” is full of melody but of course not all the lines can catch your attention in a special way (that´s something rather utopic in any album). In spite of the relative lack of originality of the style played by these Swedes, “King Of Stars – Bearer Of Dark” is an enjoyable piece of music after all. The first listenings might not tell you a single word, then the whole thing is able to appeal you.
