The entity with
the curious title Babylon Mystery Orchestra is a solo project from an American
man named Sidney Allen Johnson. Even though the band name suggests otherwise
the lyrics are pretty much down to Earth despite the constant quotations from
the book of revelation in the album booklet. When I was about to write the
review on this release I had really no idea what to write because this isn't
exactly what exactly music that I experience on a daily basis. You can compare
this to anything from Tiamat and Sisters Of Mercy to AC/DC and Faith No More.
The main foundation of the music is built on standard hard rock / heavy metal
riffing, sometimes with a bluesy edge, but there are also more atmospheric
acoustic passages and on top of this the vocals vary from gothic tinged ones
to more common hard rock but always with a deep voice. It is some impressive
work done by one single individual who surely has been gifted with a great
deal of talent. The production and cover art makes it all look and sound
professional and it's nice to see some-one who takes his work this seriously
despite the lack of label support. The first half of this album consists of
some very nice material but then comes a few less interesting tracks until the
beautiful instrumental "Divine Justice" kicks in with its pompous keyboard
arrangements and nice guitar solos. All in all, a decent album that should
appeal to those of you who appreciate atmospheric rock / metal in general and
would like to hear something with a personal touch for once. Stand-out tracks:
"Whore", "It's My Right", "Divine
Justice".
