REVIEW: Bal-Sagoth - Atlantis Ascendant Nuclear Blast, 2001
8.5/10
Bal-Sagoth - Atlantis Ascendant - cover art Bal-Sagoth continue their journey into the fantasy lands of their own, this time with the help of the legend of Atlantis. Mixing beautiful melodies, bombastic orchestral effects and symphonic black metal Bal-Sagoth has helped to create a whole new genre that Nuclear Blast has decided to name war metal where the Norwegian and Swedish viking metal bands like Einherjer and Thyrfing can also be found. Something that stands clear is the fact that no other band sounds like these British extreme metallers. They are now one of many ground-breaking British bands among famous names such as Black Sabbath, My Dying Bride, Anathema and Cradle Of Filth. This fifth opus proves the simple fact that Bal-Sagoth is a band that has planned to be remembered for a very long time ahead. Even though this is a very good release with the old trademarks of the band further developed it is not yet perfect which makes me wish that the band continues to work on their style and don´t call it off just yet. The things that I would like to enhance on this album is the sound and make it even more bombastic. That is the special effects that a band like Bal-Sagoth need to lift off towards the magic skies of forgotten lands.
