Barathrum has for a long period of time been one of the most interesting extreme metal bands from the Finnish territory and with this album the success story sadly ends but who knows what the future has to show us. "Anno Aspera...", the band's eighth studio album, has been announced as their swansong. As you may already know the initial letters of the eight albums combined spell out "Heil Sova" which of course refers to the band leader Janne "Demonos" Sova who founded the band under the name Dark Feast in 1990. Staying alive as a band in this genre for fifteen years is quite impressive. A lot of people have entered and exited throughout the years but their sound has not changed too much, mostly since it is more or less a solo project. Their slow breed of almost doom-laden black metal has captured the attention of many fans during the last 15 years and "Anno Aspera..." follows the same winning concept. It might seem boring to some but why change a winning concept, heh?
The album begins with a highly annoying intro called "Antikristus Neutronstar" which was at first meant to have been the title of the album and lasts for almost three minutes. Definitely a piece we could have been spared from. The first couple of songs following upon the intro are rather pale and weak compared to the usual standard of the band. Then things luckily begins to take off with "G.I.D." and "Sealed By Blood" where the true Barathrum spirit is brought to life again. Mixing slow- to mid-paced black metal with more traditional heavy metal riffs really made for an interesting concoction and Barathrum will definitely not go by unnoticed in the history of extreme metal. They were one of the most unique and creative bands while active and the legacy will not die. As a swansong "Anno Aspera..." is an ok album but it is not exactly their best material. The thrasher "Nailday" is a great song though. If you are looking for a masterpiece go check out their "Okkult" album instead.
