REVIEW: Barathrum - Okkult Spikefarm Records, 2000
8.5/10
Barathrum - Okkult - cover art Equipped with a massive production, an evil atmosphere, a fair dose of Iron Maiden / King Diamond melodies and one of the best black metal vocalists in the world, Barathrum offer us their new album "Okkult". These Finnish guys started out in the early 90's and have come a long way since then. Opening up with a spoken incantation we are taken on a journey through the musical landscapes of Hades that we are going to remember for a long period of time. Every single song is composed with care and contains wonderful riffs and melodies that we are not used to hear from most black metal bands. Barathrum are definitely not in the game to play as fast as possible but that is not necessary when they are able to come up with ten marvellous tracks of mid-paced black art. A couple of songs also include the Spikefarm keyboards but Barathrum are able to use them without sounding like any other band on the label. They have the experience and the talent needed to stand alone and create something fresh and new which is exactly what makes them one of the best bands in the world right now. "Okkult" is one of the top releases of the year 2000 and a jewel for everyone into thrashy melodic black metal with powerful vocals. The riffs and harmonies may not be the most advanced and groundbreaking ones in this world but they work very well indeed.
