REVIEW: Basanos - Kill the Master self-released, 2009
4/10
Basanos - Kill the Master - cover art Here are four tracks performed well by Austrian hopefuls, replete with surprisingly jazzy bent-string solos that bring to mind Fredrik Thordendal’s best work. Unfortunately, it’s surrounded by a stilted creative modus operandi that leaps from one trend to the next like Frogger did lily pads in the classic Atari game. The first two songs, “Nation of Fear” and “Fade Away,” sound like the mid-point between vintage Pantera and ‘90s Machine Head. I kid, of course, since there is no difference whatsoever between those two entities. The remaining two songs, “Vengeance Is Mine” and “Kill the Master,” veer uneasily between poor Gothenburg MDM and curiously out-of-place NWOBHM (is it just me?). All songs are linked by a metalcore intensity long on bludgeon, short on nuance, and none too interesting to me at this point. Acceptable for its aims, but why oh why do some bands aim so low?
