REVIEW: Bathory - Katalog Black Mark Production, 2001
9/10
Bathory - Katalog - cover art The legendary Swedish band Bathory were one among a couple of bands who founded the whole black metal genre in the late 1980's. As if this wasn't enough they (or he since it is pretty much a one-man band) have been very productive throughout the years with more than ten album releases. If you haven't been able to get to know this band before for one reason or another then here is your chance to do so since Black Mark has decided to release this album simply called "Katalog" which contains one track from every album. From the early raw black metal albums throughout the viking metal era and the more straight-forward sound on latter releases we can follow one of the most influential metal bands ever. I personally prefer their mid-period albums "Blood Fire Death" and "Hammerheart" although I have to admit that they are all full of some very good music. The sound quality is pretty crappy on most songs and the music itself is not amazing in any way but somehow Bathory manage to create an atmosphere that no other band has been able to copy. This is black, this is cult, this is metal.
