REVIEW: Battlehorns - Battlehorns Hohenstaufen Records, 2002
5.5/10
Battlehorns - Battlehorns - cover art Battlehorns is a French black metal band that formed in 1997, inspired by the Norwegian sounds from the early 90's such as Dødheimsgard, Satyricon, Manes, Thorns and Zyklon B. It is not difficult to trace these influences in their music either when listening to this debut album of theirs. Signed to their native label Hohenstaufen Records they offer their first attack on modern black metal. Battlehorns want nothing to do with the keyboard infected sounds of today. Instead they want to bring back the old classic feeling that started it all. Raw, primal and, not to be forgotten, intense black metal with a Darkthrone production is what these French guys have to offer. They are not bad at what they do but the production is a little bit of an earsoar at times. There are some golden moments here though such as the killer track "Conquering Black Storm", a song that should make all fans of underground black metal jump with joy (if you do that of course...). There is nothing unique or groundbreaking about this release but those of you who feel that there is not enough apocalyptic war metal in this world might want to given them a chance.
