REVIEW: Battlelore - Third Age Of The Sun Napalm Records, 2005
8.5/10
Battlelore - Third Age Of The Sun - cover art Finland's Tolkien fanatics Battlelore continue their journey into the mysterious world known as Middle-Earth with their third album "Third Age Of The Sun". For the first time they have decided to work with famous Norwegian born producer Terje Refsnes in his Sound Suite studio which has resulted in their most fresh sounding production to this date. Luckily he has not added the usual bombastics to the album but managed to adjust his sound wizardry to suit the unique Battlelore sound. I have claimed right from their debut album that there is no band who sounds like them and that statement still stands. Despite, or maybe thanks to, having found their own niche they are not recycling the same material over and over again but have come with three very even and interesting albums already. Compared to the previous two releases, "Third Age Of The Sun" is surrounded by a somewhat darker atmosphere and the female vocals by Kaisa Jouhki has been offered more space which was obviously a wise decision. Subtle melodies and an excellently balanced use of keyboards and electronic experiments further helps lift the album miles above mediocrity and it marks yet another successful point in the career of Battlelore - one of the few truely original bands around today.
