If you aren’t already hip to the press hype or are too dense to gauge the concept from the band name, is a simple one: Beatles songs performed in the Metallica style by four devotees working under similar mash-up pseudonyms: Kliff McBurtney and Ringo Larz, anyone? Said hilarity is eclipsed only by the song titles – “Fuel on the Hill,” “Got to Get You Trapped Under Ice,” “Tomorrow Never Comes" (oh, the nuance of that last one!), not to mention how the respective bands’ musical and lyrical concepts are reconciled in each song. They might trade off line for line – “the masterful mystery tour is waiting to pull all your strings,” – or they might depart from both groups entirely, as on “I Wanna Choke Your Band” (yep!). Either way, it’s consistently entertaining and performed so affectionately, replete with spot-on vocals by one Jaymz Lennfield, that it ennobles the reputation of both groups (one of which could stand a bit more ennobling as of late). Longtime Beatallica fans might gripe about the seeming rehash of updating demo-era tracks such as “The Thing That Should Not Let It Be” and “Everybody's Got a Ticket to Ride Except for Me and My Lightning,” but eff those folks. Taking parody seriously is a fool’s errand. Me, I’m still waiting to hear a better-sounding rendition of “We Can Hit the Lightz” on the next record. In the meantime, this is a terrific sophomore LP from the quartet that strives to be bigger than Jesus by selling out... every seat of every show every time it plays. See what I did right there, didja?
