Wow. This is some very well put together Rock-n-Roll where the boys seem to have pieces from a few different pies on their plate at once. The biggest slice has to be the Aerosmith by-way-of Guns N' Roses brand of Hard Rock with additional flavor provided by some sampling of Grunge (notably late-era Soundgarden [or even Audioslave] and Alice in Chains) and modern Metallica (think "Fuel"). Though the band looks like Motley Crue and Velvet Revolver got into a fight, the music comes first and this band surely rocks.
The Beautiful Creatures line-up is composed of some surprising names, primarily vocalist Joe LeSte of Bang Tango (!) and lead guitarist Mark Simpson formerly of Flotsam & Jetsam. So is this Hair Metal, Thrash, or some combination of the two? The answer is "none of the above." Deuce is chock full of catchy hooks, cool riffs, great leads, raspy but capable vocals that approach Rob Zombie at times, and a nice 80s vibe overall that wouldn't be out of place in a bar, stadium, or club.
Near the end of "Unforgiven" you can practically hear W. Axl Rose offering his signature vocal pattern. The following song ("Save Me") invokes Overkill's "Half Past Dead" -- particularly with some of the vocal patterns on the verses -- and a solo John Christ in the riffs (off his under-appreciated "Flesh Caffeine"). "Superfly" recalls Static-X in the main riff, but no one said this had to be an all original affair. Bottom line: Deuce is very pleasantly surprising and a nice supplement to a diet of Velvet Revolver, if you need more of that G'n'R sound. Fun.
