REVIEW: Beautiful Sin - The Unexpected AFM Records, 2006
7.5/10
Beautiful Sin - The Unexpected - cover art In 2002 former Helloween and current Masterplan skin basher Uli Kusch met up with a talented Belgian singer called Magali Luyten. He agreed to produce a demo CD for her band but the band was not picked up by a label and eventually split up. Two years later Uli did however approach Magali once again as he had been working on some material of his own and this is where Beautiful Sin started. Rounding out the band is Jorn Viggo Lofstad (guitars) and Stefan Krokmo (bass) from the Norwegian progressive power metal act Pagans Mind as well as Uli's bandmate Axel Mackenrot (keyboards) from Masterplan. Musically Beautiful Sin is more similar to Masterplan than Pagans Mind but it is not very closely related to either band. "The Unexpected" is more in the vein of classic hard rock with a modern and intense metallic touch. It is no doubt that Magali is the star of the band, in fact it is quite surprising that she has not been fronting a successful band in the past.

The band's debut album contains several potential hit songs such as the radio and club picks "Lust" and "This Is Not The Original Dream" but "Take Me Home" and "Give Up Once For All" are also very strong tracks. All of these are driven forth by Magali's powerful and passionate voice, well suited for this kind of heavy rock music. Sometimes I feel like comparing her to Kimberly Goss although this Belgian girl has more of a natural and laid-back style of singing. Where Kimberly shouts, Magali actually sings. If Masterplan finds it hard to replace Jorn Lande then Mr. Kusch has found himself another creative outlet. "The Unexpected" is a solid and memorable debut that I am sure will appeal to most fans of melodic metal with female vocals.
