REVIEW: Before The Dawn - My Darkness Locomotive Music, 2003
6.5/10
Before The Dawn - My Darkness - cover art The Finnish band Before The Dawn was originally formed back in 1999 as a solo project of guitarist / vocalist Tuomas Saukkonen. After having recorded two demos Tuomas and their former drummer decided to form their own record label called Hellbound Records. They released their debut EP "Gehenna" through Hellbound in 2001 and this release in turn led to a real record deal with the Spanish label Locomotive Music. The full-length debut "My Darkness" starts off with a heavy song called "Unbreakable" which is driven by a simple but powerful and efficient rhythm. This is by far the highlight of the entire album and unfortunately none of the following tracks manage to live up to the expectations set this early. Before The Dawn play some kind of mix between gothic, death and power metal. The songs are generally built on a few heavy guitar riffs backed up with some keyboards, standard drumming and melancholic melodies that make other Finnish bands like Amorphis, Sentenced and Insomnium come to mind. The music is generally more atmospheric than aggressive even though there are growling vocals side by side with the clean ones. This young band consists of skilled musicians, the production is more or less perfect but they still need to work a little on their song writing if they want to make a real lasting impression on me.
