It is not very often that so called guest appearances (read: marketing tricks) make much sense but with Behemoth it actually does. On their new album "Demigod", Karl Sanders of Nile contributes some of his skills. Not that it makes much of a difference for the final result, it certainly does not, but Nile and Behemoth have several things in common. First off, they are both some of the finer brutal death metal acts around today and second they share strong oriental influences. While the oriental influences mainly shine through in the lyrics of Nile today, for Behemoth it is very apparent in the music as well. The more albums a band have released the more difficult it is to live up to the expectations from the fans and the metal media and it is easy to disappoint people. However, Behemoth will not disappoint anyone with Demigod, their seventh full-length album in a 13 years career.
What will strike the listener at first is how aggressive and powerful this album is. Despite this the band never loses track of that unique Behemoth atmosphere. It reeks of professionalism, from song writing through execution to the stellar production and stunning artwork. Eerie harmonies are coupled with hellish growls and well-placed solos. "Demigod" is extreme and violent but at the same time it is an exceptional piece of art in the field of organized chaos. The band leader Nergal is a true craftsman, having not only written the music but also produced the album in their home country of Poland. A Polish production will probably get you thinking but don't worry, this album was finalized in a highly professional studio and the final result is impressive. The mixing was done in Sweden by sound wizard Daniel Bergstrand (a.o. Meshuggah, Strapping Young Lad, In Flames) who brought new ideas into the band and added the final touch.
If you want high quality brutal death metal anno 2004 then don't look towards Florida. Poland is now the place to be and Behemoth is one of the finer bands to come out of the Eastern European country.
