REVIEW: Belinus - Battlechants (EP) Self-financed, 2002
7/10
Belinus - Battlechants (EP) - cover art The Irish metal scene has been growing rapidly during the 1990's with bands like Cruachan, Primordial, Waylander and others making their way across Europe. Belinus is one of the younger ones and was originally formed back in 1995. After going through the usual line-up problems and finishing off their educations they have now recorded a demo CD on their own to spread their music around the world. Belinus label their own music as "celtic war metal" and in lack of a better description that one will have to do. In fact this is one of the most interesting new black metal releases of any kind (demo, album etc.) that I have heard in a while. The album starts off with a nice acoustic passage which makes you understand that what is to come is something out of the ordinary and this most certainly is. Mixing early Cradle Of Filth with Darkthrone and adding a spice of classic metal Belinus have created a very nice demo that will certainly gain them some interest from labels in the near future. For now they have at least caught my interest and increased my liking of Irish metal in general. These guys have made some powerful tracks like "StormGod" and "Cursus" but the thing that sticks to my mind the most is the very strong vocals. Perhaps the production isn't too perfect but it is still good for a demo recording. Fans of atmospheric and pretty raw black metal should enjoy Belinus.
