REVIEW: Benighted - Psychose Adipocere Records, 2002
7/10
Benighted - Psychose - cover art Benighted is a French band that was formed in 1998 by musicians from the bands Darkness Fire, Osgiliath and Dishumanized. With influences ranging from Cannibal Corpse to Marduk they have found their own sound which is a chaotic and violent mix of black and death metal with both guttural death growls and tortured black metal vocals. The vocals actually reminds me a lot of what Cradle Of Filth used to sound like. This means that the vocals are very well done if you don't get my point. This is the second album from this young band and they are in fact one of the most promising French bands I've heard in quite some time. The music is exciting and dynamic and never comes to a stand-still which is something very important if you want to perform well in extreme music. It is very easy to sound monotonous if you don't plan the songs with skill. Benighted is definitely a skilled band and we will without a doubt hear and see more of them in the future. If you are into brutal death metal and black metal and and are looking for a quality release then your search is over. Recommended to those of you who think Cradle Of Filth aren't brutal enough and could do without the gothic keyboard arrangements. This is a band with a huge potential for success. Stand-out tracks: "Arcanes Démoniaques", "Paranoia".
