Bethlehem is one of the most
successful but also experimental bands on the Prophecy label and they have
even gained some serious attention from Marilyn Manson who has claimed them to
be the most promising band of the "under-developed German nation". Old fans
of the band should prepare themselves for a surprise when acquiring this new
ambitious double album release. Instead of the dark metal that we have grown
used to through their previous releases they have now concentrated on their
more experimental side which means more noise, more spoken words, more
industrial and less metal. Some people have said that this release has nothing
to do with metal whatsoever but I don't quite agree there. Sure, most of the
music is slow, rhythmic and harmonic in a weird melancholic way but there are
also some metal riffs here and there which add some extra spice to the music.
Bethlehem have managed to put everything on one single album (well, two
then...) - industrial music, pop sounds, tormentive noise and also something
of a melancholic gothic sound. At times they almost sound like Rammstein but
that might only be because they are singing in German... The music is far from
Rammstein's techno metal though. This is a well thought out concept album
about a man who suffers from megalomania but there is something missing to
make it the masterpiece it could have become. It is still a very interesting
album and you never know what Bethlehem is up to
next.
