REVIEW: Bewitched - Somewhere Beyond The Mist Conquistador Records, 2001
6/10
Bewitched - Somewhere Beyond The Mist - cover art The first thought that came rushing through my head when listening to the first track of this third full-length album from the Chilean band Bewitched was: How can you want to release an album with such lousy vocals? It gets better though and it is only when they use the black metal vocals that it sounds like this. While listening to those tracks you kind of wish that they had made them completely instrumental. This is perhaps not the most original album I have ever heard but then again that is not something we are used to hear from South American bands in general. Bewitched have been around for a while now though and I think it is fair to expect something more than this from them. As long as they are playing fast black metal it doesn't sound very interesting but the doomier songs and the more varied ones with clean vocals are exceptionally well done. The second track "Stargazer" is a nice track and really shows the best side of Bewitched, at least the first half of it. It is not easy being a metal band in a country like Chile but Bewitched are definitely doing their best of their situation and if you would like to listen to more than an hour of emotional and atmospheric dark metal this is a good choice. The cover version of Candlemass' "Bewitched" was necessary at one time or another in the band's career I guess :-)
