REVIEW: Beyond Dawn - Far From Showbiz (CDs) Peaceville Records, 2003
7/10
Beyond Dawn - Far From Showbiz (CDs) - cover art Beyond Dawn's "Far From Showbiz" single is a promotional material for the upcoming album "Frysh". The music of this band is a very calm, very excentric sounding electro-rock (they certainly have changed a lot in the years). Guitars don't have very much to do in this style, but they are still there only to make things a bit more exciting. The vocals are almost as freaky as the concept of the instrumentation itself, on "Among The Sedatives" for example they are very electro, and on "Righteous Underground" and "Far From Showbiz" have a very depressive and spooky vibe to them as well. I came to like these three songs more than I thought I would. I only listened to them at first because they were interesting, but by the second listen I've found that they have heart (but I was expecting something more aggressive from this band!). My fav track is "Among The Sedatives" which kind of reminds me of a game that used to run on an old computer of mine (don't know if you remember CGA cards and 80286 processors...) called "Alley-cat". Even the cover graphics remind me of old CGA, EGA games. Although they mix very "vintage" sounding digital alongside with other electro instrumentation the concept could be welcomed in today's music exactly because it sticks out of the pile. My taste would require more excitement guitar-wise and even overall but I think Beyond Dawn's music could appeal to many people out there, so I'm not taking any credits away just because of that (but the radical style-change is painful). Very interesting, very nicely conceived, but still in need of some spicing in my opinion. Beyond Dawn might just find themselves some solid gound in the biz with the new sound, and might just have the chance to evolve quite a lot by the next studio project. In the meantime, I think I want a copy of "Frysh".
