REVIEW: Black Abyss - Angels Wear Black Massacre Records, 2004
7/10
Black Abyss - Angels Wear Black - cover art Black Abyss is a German band that has been around forever it seems, or at least since 1990, but few of you have heard of them I suspect. Nor had I before I heard this album but that is a shame because I was positively surprised when I heard them. Despite the band name the music we deal with here is power metal mixed with classic 80s heavy metal and a small amount of modern thrash metal. The result is quite entertaining as Black Abyss are both skilled musicians and decent songwriters. There are moments when they fall victim to repetitive patterns but most of the songs on this album are definitely worth the money spent on it. Fans of Hammerfall and Helloween might not appreciate this right from the start but if you are also a fan of Iron Maiden and the more aggressive and slightly darker side of power metal á la Nevermore and Brainstorm then it will be an easier meal to digest I believe. The frontman Oliver Hornung shows a very wide register and although he does not master every aspect of his voice equally well he is an important factor in the equation that makes the Black Abyss machinery work. Nothing new and fancy but what's wrong with an old Volvo which has never failed before? Stand-out tracks: "Damnation", "When Angels Wear Black".
