REVIEW: Black Crucifixion - The Fallen One Of Flames Paragon Records, 2005
7/10
Black Crucifixion - The Fallen One Of Flames - cover art Don't get too excited, any of you tr00/kvlt/n3cr0 bastards reading this. What we have here is actually the latest re-release of the band's 1992 demo. Why now? Why not?! This is Black Metal "for fans of Beherit, Bathory, Darkthrone, and Celtic Frost" according to the official press release. While not originally a side project for the men of Beherit, two members of that band would join this group early on (Sodomatic Slaughter and Wennström) while a third helped write some music and lyrics heard on this very release (Holocausto Vengeance). The first and last tracks are pure ambient affairs while the lengthy (7+ minutes!) "Flowing Downward" provides the bulk of this recording -- all of which are Holocausto Vengeance's work. The vocals here are muted, whispered, and quite effective at creating an eerie atmosphere. The music is grim, bleak, and primitive to be sure, and certain to make fans of the most TRUE Black Metal rejoice. Production is a bad word so we won't go into it here, but the sound quality is reasonably low, though not ineffective, and it actually cuts out a few times, indicating problems with the source tape. This is purely for dedicated warriors of the frozen north. Quite interesting, particularly considering its age.
