"They're baaack!" With that let the focus be on what The Black Dahlia Murder do -- they incorporate, plain and simple, but they do it so very well. On Nocturnal, Trevor "Heartburn" Strnad and the boys play "more of the same" but with a ruthless abandon not seen this side of a new Deicide album, though this band has retained its original axemen, Brian Eschbach and John Kempainen. At ~35 minutes, the madness is apparently At the Gates, and this is even borne out with the artwork, completed by none other than Kristian "Necrolord" Whalin (he of Slaughter of the Soul fame).
Perhaps the responsibility/blame for the newfound fury can be laid at the feet -- and fingers -- of the newly recruited rhythm section, Shannon Lucas (drums) and Bart Williams (bass). Where some may have felt Miasma was a little flat, such cannot be said about Nocturnal, which has a palpable sense of urgency. Oh, sure, they've perpetrated lotsa familiar components from the Thrash, Black, and Death Metal genres, but it kicks ass. Yeah, even if a song title was borrowed from a particular video game featuring a vampire slayer not named Buffy ("What a Horrible Night to Have a Curse" and Castlevania II: Simon's Quest, respectively).
