Black Flame is an Italian band that
formed in 1999 with the intention of turning their worst nightmares, cruelties
and obsession for the occult into music. This is something that they have
managed to achieve with this cd which contains atmospheric and primitive black
metal with a thrashy Slayer-ish edge at times. All the way along it is
chilling cold, dark and ominous with some nice spoken sections that add a nice
touch. Speaking of chilling cold, the acoustic intro to the fourth track
"Memories Of Blood & Sins" is beautiful and gives me chills just listening
to it. The vocals are well done and there is a faint smell of Mortuary Drape
hanging over this record. Perhaps it has something to do with the band's
drummer m:A Fog who have been serving in Mortuary Drape and Daemusinem among
many other Italian extreme metal bands. This is not very fast black metal but
Black Flame rely more on heavy churning riffs and a great deal of ominous
atmosphere together with raw and aggressive black metal vocals. Some parts are
highly enjoyable but the album is a little bit too uneven. One of the
highlights is the cover of Mortuary Drape's wonderful track "Abbot". Other
than that the two tracks that makes the biggest impressions on me are "The
Creator Failed" and "Memories Of Blood & Sins". The album would perhaps
have benefitted from a better production and I do mean better, not just
cleaner because that is not what a black metal album should sound like, at
least not a Black Flame album. Black Flame are for sure one of the most
interesting underground acts in Italy at the moment and if they improve on
their song writing skills they could become a very powerful force to be
reckoned with. Still a little uneven but recommended to fans of atmospheric
and raw black metal.
