REVIEW: Black Funeral - Ordog Behemoth Productions, 2006
6.5/10
Black Funeral - Ordog - cover art I really hate lousy promo sheets, such as the one for Ordog album, whose only aim is to make you buy the CD. First line goes like this: “The leading US black metal band strikes again with absolutely the most hypnotic, alienating and gruesome album to date!” From all these words I can only agree this is very gruesome. C’mon, the leading US Black Metal band? There are dozens of bands before Black Funeral… All these lies are without any sense, and are only damaging the band's reputation, although probably nobody asked them anything while writing the text of the promo sheet. As for the album itself, it is actually not pure Black Metal, it has a lot of industrial elements contained, and usually when I think of industrial BM it’s bands like Diabolicum, but this is not that kind of music. This is more like combining Nargaroth or Graveland with Einstürzende Neubauten, monotonous, repeating, simple riffs with an annoying sound and drums not changing rhythm throughout the song more than a few times, some industrial noise samplings added and constant buzzing in the background. On top of all that there’s a shrieking voice, louder than the instruments. It also reminds me of two other acts I had a chance (should I say, punishment?) to review: Benighted Leams and Ethereal Woods. So, this really isn’t the kind of music you can relax to, it gives me that itching that I must move my body to find a suitable position, all the time, if you know what I mean. Eventually, it is very evil and ghoulish. Another, non-music, aspect for "Ordog" is the heavy concentration of occultism in its darker form. The entire album is dedicated to Satan, vampirism, Persian mythology with two songs featuring lyrics from formerly incarcerated cannibal, killer, “artist”, Creepy. Definitely not my style of music and I am very glad that I wrote the review and don’t have to listen to this anymore, but if you like very sick and eerie industrial Black Metal check this out.
