REVIEW: Black Sabbath - Master Of Reality Warner Bros Records, 1971
10/10
Black Sabbath - Master Of Reality - cover art Despite the somewhat controversial lyrical content of these early Black Sabbath releases they are some of the most influential and important releases in the whole history of heavy music. "Master Of Reality" had no impact whatsoever on me when it was released as I was not to be born until nine years later but now I hold it as one of my absolute favorite albums together with the two first Sabbath albums. Two of the heaviest tracks the band produced can be found on this album - "After Forever" and "Into The Void" - and to me they are also some of the best music they ever made. Of course we can not forget about the classic "Children Of The Grave" either which is probably one of the band's most wellknown songs. Black Sabbath has never made a name for themselves by composing complex progressive songs or even that memorable melodies. Instead it is their ability to come up with simple yet highly efficient riffs and of course the vocals from their very charismatic frontman that made them what they were. "Master Of Reality" was the last in a row of three more or less perfect albums and Black Sabbath would never be able to create albums as complete as these were. Their later releases are not bad at all but they are more uneven with only a couple of songs reaching the same original quality. "Master Of Reality" is also similar to the first two albums in the sense that it has a calm psychedelic track. "Black Sabbath" had "Sleeping Village", "Paranoid" had "Planet Caravan" and "Master Of Reality" has "Solitude". We also have a very short but equally weird instrumental track in "Embryo" as well. Yet another must-have for fans of heavy music in general and metal in particular.
