REVIEW: Blackmore's Night - Fires At Midnight Steamhammer Records, 2001
9.5/10
Blackmore's Night - Fires At Midnight - cover art Ritchie Blackmore is one of the very few legendary guitarists from the 70's who is still able to make interesting music now that we enter the 21st century. Blackmore's Night is nothing like Rainbow or Deep Purple but it is just as classy music as those two. There are many bands who claim to be playing necoclassical this and that but none manage to weave a renaissance atmosphere like this. Not much has changed musically since the first two albums with songs built on old traditional melodies and spiced up with semi-metal arrangements. A few minor differences can be spotted though; the vocals from Candice Night are even stronger, the best songs are better but the worst songs are also worse. There are too many plain pop songs this time. Several superb tracks like "I Still Remember", "Fires At Midnight" and "Village On The Sand" still make this a must-have album and for the first time we can hear Candice's voice with a small amount of attitude and edge. For those interested in useless knowledge I might as well mention that the melody on "Fires At Midnight" was also used by In Extremo as the "Maria Virgin" track on their album "Weckt Die Toten!" back in 1997.
