REVIEW: Blackmore's Night - Under A Violet Moon Edel Records, 1999
9.5/10
Blackmore's Night - Under A Violet Moon - cover art Who would have though that Ritchie Blackmore was capable and willing of creating music like this after hearing his work with rock giants Rainbow and Deep Purple. No one can deny the influence his old bands have had on countless bands but in my opinion this is a lot more unique and genuine than anything he has ever done in the past. Blackmore's Night is, as you may have guessed from the name, his solo project since a number of years back and this is their second album release. Even though the album cover tells otherwise the music on "Under A Violet Moon" is some of the most exciting there is. Most of the tracks are composed by Blackmore with melodies taken from traditional medieval and renaissance music. The result is one of the most colourful musical entities that us humble inhabitants of planet Earth have had the chance to experience. A lot of metal bands, power metal bands in particular, have experimented with medieval and neo-classical melodies for a decade or so now but Blackmore's Night is far from being a metal band. Instead the music is almost completely acoustic and based on amazing guitar work from Blackmore coupled with the sweet caressing vocals from his girlfriend Candice Night. This siren of the night has got one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard and she sings one song after another with such confident ease that you would think that this is what she has been doing througout her entire life. This album also features about twenty additional musicians and among them we can find no other than Jens Johansson (Yngwie Malmsteen, Stratovarius a.o.) on keyboards. Almost every single track is a masterpiece in itself except for "Wind In The Willows" where I could definitely do without the annoying male vocals. Stand-out tracks: "Under A Violet Moon", "Morning Star", "Catherine Howard's Fate", "Fool's Gold".
