REVIEW: Blackshine - Soulless & Proud Steamhammer Records, 2002
7.5/10
Blackshine - Soulless & Proud - cover art Blackshine was originally formed under the name Hetshead in 1988 and soon made themselves a name on the death metal scene in Stockholm. They were however looking for new ways to express themselves through the media of music and today they don't really sound anyway near death metal except for some of the vocals. They released their first album on their own in 1995 but it was with the second album "Our Pain Is Your Pleasure" in 1997 that they became known world-wide and was given the chance to go out on tour with U.D.O. and open up for Bruce Dickinson. After breaking up with their former label and drummer they are now back with the third release. The new label is the German Steamhammer and the new drummer is Håkan Erikson who has previously played for both Godblender and Face Down. Blackshine are pretty successful in mixing melancholic metal with straight-forward Swedish rock 'n' roll and there are no lack of beautiful melodies on this album. However, I can't really make up my mind whether I love or hate the vocals by Anders Strokirk. If you like gothic music, raw dirty hard rock or stoner rock I think you will like this release. Listen to the track "Another Twist" and you will know what Blackshine is all about.
