In my recent quest to keep up with the modern mainstream music of the commercial TV channels I first came to experience the sounds of Finland's Blake in the shape and form of their video for "Two Ways". I then remembered that I had seen their album in one of the promo piles that unfortunately grow in the wrong direction right now. I decided to give the band a chance because I really liked what I saw, especially the vocalist Aaro Seppovaara made a lasting impression on me with his deep and unique voice. It is no surprise at all to me that he was nominated for a "best vocalist" award at the Finnish metal awards. Musically Blake make your mind launch association shuttles back in time to the 70s and a little band called Black Sabbath in particular but they have not copied anyone straight off. Elements have been borrowed from blues and stoner rock and also modern rock / metal. Mixing all these various influences they make me feel that there is still hope for heavy music in a time when the clones are growing stronger by the number while the originals remain the same. Memorable hooks and melodies make "Planetizer" an album well worth the money for everyone into groovy and heavy metal.
