REVIEW: Blind Guardian - A Twist In The Myth Nuclear Blast, 2006
8.5/10
Blind Guardian - A Twist In The Myth - cover art Marking the end of the band's long time collaboration with Virgin Records and the beginning of a hopefully prosperous relationship with metal specialists Nuclear Blast, "A Twist In The Myth" takes off where "A Night At The Opera" left us four years ago. While many people, and fans of the band of course, found the previous album to be slightly over the top with its multitude of layers, the new offering focuses on a more straight-forward recording without stepping away from the traditional Blind Guardian sound - the upbeat melodies, the folk-ish touch, fantasy themes, majestic choruses, world class song writing and of course the characteristic vocals from Hansi Kürsch who makes a stellar performance once again and maintains his position as one of the most unique and talented vocalists of today. It is probably impossible for the German veterans to top the classics "Battalions Of Fear" and "Nightfall In Middle-Earth" but this is yet another fine piece of Hobbit metal and one of the most anticipated releases of the year. The first time I heard "A Twist In The Myth" a few months ago I was left with a blank mind and somewhat disappointed but it is an album that grows on you which is a good sign.
