REVIEW: Blinded By Faith - Under An Occult Sun Galy Records, 2003
7/10
Blinded By Faith - Under An Occult Sun - cover art At one time this 6-man unit was known as Cryptic Spell, and have plugged along through the standard line-up shuffles most bands seem to deal with. Blinded By Faith are a lighter strain of black metal, with keyboardist Danny taking the lead more often than not. Tracks like "A Perfect Imperfection" are a prime example of this, as he plunks out long melodies while the rest of the band trem pick and chunk away behind him. There was a little too much light-heartedness for my metal preference in "The World Hs Something to Offer", though, a trait that will surely cost the band the support of the "true/kult black metal" scene. The tempos never seemed to vary too much, and that's something that can be taken as good or bad depending on your tastes; I, myself, would have enjoyed some more speed. While the bass drum sat nicely in the mix and had a warm low-end to it, the snare could have used some more snap. Up front, Tommy has an above-par vocal range, aptly moving from a thrash rasp to the highest of black metal screeches. Blinded By Faith's lyrics, especially those of guitarist Daniel, are quite good, and they delve into occultism with candor and depth. The symbolism in the artwork was also very commendable, and put a nice finishing touch on this 9-song outing. Favorite tracks: "Under An Occult Sun", "The Triumph Of Treachery".
