REVIEW: Blinded Colony - Bedtime Prayers Pivotal Rockordings, 2007
7.5/10
Blinded Colony - Bedtime Prayers - cover art A fine exemplar of the sound that Soilwork hath wrought, Sweden's Blinded Colony cling tightly to the slightly commercial variant of Gothenburgian death refined by Strid, Wichers, et al., all frenetically shrieked verses tempered by the soothing lanolin of a saccharine, melancholy-tinged chorus. You know the rest: muscular geetar licks abutting lush keyboard atmospherics, quasi-breakdowns that fling sideways into another masterful lick. To some, this is anathema by its very blueprint; to others, a more-of-the-same carbon copy such as the work here is merely unnecessary. But phooey to both camps, I say. A good song is a good song is a good song, and Blinded Colony know how to write a very good song. Sure, they follow it up with nine others exactly like it, but I'll forsake considerations of originality for the time being in favor of kudos to the band's production sheen (done by themselves, no less), knack for melodic hook and overall metallic enthusiasm. If I were Soilwork, I'd take it as a compliment and perhaps consider phoning my copyright attorneys, but a metal neophyte who missed the landfall of In Flames, Arch Enemy, Gardenian and so forth between 1996 and 2000 should enjoy this with little compunction.
