REVIEW: Blodsrit - Helveteshymner Oaken Shield, 2004
7.5/10
Blodsrit - Helveteshymner - cover art On their previous album "Ocularis Infernum", the Swedish black metal act Blodsrit had a song with Swedish lyrics entitled "I Sorg, För Syndens Saknad". Apparently that was something they wanted to explore further as they have included several songs in Swedish on their new album "Helveteshymner" ("Hellhymns" in English). Musically they have not drifted from the past and my opinion that this is one of the most underrated black metal bands of today has not changed since having heard these nine songs. While the previous release was recorded at a French studio this time they decided to stay on Swedish soil and work with Nasum's Mieszko Talarczyk (R.I.P.) at Soundlab Studios, giving their music a further push forward into the land of audial terror. Blodsrit may be primitive and raw but at the same time their songs are very atmospheric and, not seldom, even melodic. On top of this band leader and founder Nazgûl (Jimmie Nyhlén) delivers first class black metal vocals. His sharp and solid performance should satisfy most fans of the genre. The sonic landscape is both bleak and violent but isn't that the way black metal should be? Surprisingly enough Blodsrit have included a cover of Candlemass' classic "Solitude", the opening of their close to legendary debut "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus". Quite an interesting choice as they give the song a blacker twist.
