REVIEW: Blodsrit - Ocularis Infernum Oaken Shield, 2003
7.5/10
Blodsrit - Ocularis Infernum - cover art Blodsrit is one of the lesser known black metal bands from Sweden but they deserve more attention than they have been given so far. The band formed in the mid 90s by vocalist and guitarist Nazgûl. At that time he felt that all the bands he played with were too musically advanced or technical for his taste. Instead he wanted something more raw, harsh and primitive in the vein of early Scandinavian bands like Darkthrone, Marduk and Carpathian Forest. The result of his desire for simple and straightforward music was Blodsrit. "Ocularis Infernum" is the second album from the band who were originally signed to the now defunct French label Chanteloup Creations. Their new home is Oaken Shield who continue to carry the torch of Chanteloup into a darker future where all hope is gone. Now I wouldn't say that this is as simple and primitive as it gets but Blodsrit have doubtless taken a lot of inspiration from the aforementioned bands, especially early material from Darkthrone, Marduk but also Dark Funeral pre Diabolis Interium. While there are many many bands out there who claim to be true, evil and primitive in the spirit of black metal the result is far too often monotonous and unoriginal. This is an obstacle Blodsrit have managed to overcome. The music presented on their first follow-up album is exciting and the album doesn't lack songs and riffs that will be remembered. The production is raw but still professional and I think they have found the perfect balance for their sound. The recordings were done in a French studio but the mastering was done by no other than the living legend Dan Swanö who probably have realized the potential of this band. Blodsrit is one of the most promising black metal bands that Sweden has to offer right now and they are moving up close behind pioneering veterans Marduk and Dark Funeral. The band's drummer Fiebig you may know from other acts like Paganizer, Carve or Portal. Definitely recommended. Stand-out tracks: "Secrets Unveiled", "Dying Breed", "The Rape Of Vestal Purity", "Rulers Of The Desolate Lands".
